How to make fast food, go!

Yes, you’ve read the heading correctly, this is a post about fast food and how you can make it in your own kitchen. When we speak about fast food, we are not speaking about food that comes from a fast food chain of restaurants. What we are talking about here, is food that you can prepare, quickly and easily in your own home.

When you begin following the Atkins® way of eating, you will find that there is a huge variety of foods that can be eaten on the diet and more over, an almost endless choice of recipes that your own personal menu can be made up from. And because it is your menu, you can make it as interesting, elaborate or as simple as you choose.

“Where is this fast food you promised, I’ve been waiting an age now and still now sign of it!” Don’t worry, it is on its way to you post haste, just sit back and enjoy the post.

Here are a few recipes that will allow you to cook a hearty breakfast or lunch or dinner in record time. This addresses two issues. Firstly it allows you to have more time in your day whilst still eating properly and two it prevents you from snacking on empty carbs from a vending machine. So, let us begin at the beginning, with breakfast.

Breakfast: The Humble Omelette

The omelette is a super food and it is also super quick to prepare and make. There are countless combinations of fillings that you can put into your omelette and ultimately this will be dictated by you.The base ingredient for an omelette is eggs. The basic utensils required to make an omelette are, a pan and a spatula. So, without further ado, here is one of my own personal favorite omelettes, the

3 Cheese Omelette

Ingredients: per 1 serving

  • 2 large eggs (free range)
  • 1/2 tbsp of real butter
  • 1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup crumbled wensleydale cheese
  • 1/4 cup gorgonzola cheese
  • 1/4 tsp salt and pepper
  • some fresh parsley

To make the omelette, heat the pan and add the butter. Once the butter is melted the pan is hot enough to add the eggs that you have lightly beaten in a cup. Reduce heat slightly and allow the eggs to cook until almost all of the egg has become solid the whole way through. Add the three types of cheese by sprinkling it over one half of the egg, add salt and pepper for flavor. Just as the cheese is beginning to melt, take your spatula and fold the half of the omelette with no cheese over on top of the half that has the cheese. Gently press down on the folded omelette. Turn off heat and allow omelette to finish cooking or until the cheese has melted to your liking. Garnish with some fresh parsley and transfer to a warm plate and serve. From start to finish, making an omelette like the one described in this recipe will take you no more than 5 minutes. Now that is FAST FOOD

Lunch: A Salad Supreme

The great thing about making a salad for lunch is you can prepare this while your breakfast is cooking. We make this salad in the mornings before leaving the house. Once you have the base ingredients like red wine vinegar/cinder vinegar, olive oil, mixed salad leaf, lettuce, scallion/onion then you can begin adding whatever other ingredients that you feel would make up a tasty salad for you. In the recipe below you will see avocado and cherry tomato. Both of these make any salad wonderful.

Avocado Salad

Ingredients: per 1 serving

  • half a bowl lettuce/mixed leaf salad
  • 1-2 tbsp of olive oil
  • 1 tbsp of red wine vinegar
  • half dozen cherry tomato’s
  • 1 tsp dried coriander or 1 tbsp of fresh coriander
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 medium scallions (spring onion)
  • 1 ripe avocado

Tasty and Easy Avocado and Tomato Salad

To make the salad, you need to quarter the cherry tomato’s and place in a small bowl. Add the vinegar and coriander and salt to the tomato’s and allow to marinate. In a larger bowl add the lettuce/salad leaf, spring onion; cube the scooped out avocado and add to the bowl. Mix all together using your hands or a salad spoon. Once everything is roughly mixed, add the contents of the smaller bowl containing the cherry tomato’s back into the larger bowl. Drizzle the olive oil over the whole salad and serve or store in a container for later use

Finally, when you arrive home from a long day and it is time for dinner, getting actual fast food sometimes seems like the simplest option. Stop! You don’t need to submit to these cravings. Here is a super quick idea for dinner that is both delicious and filling.

Dinner: Lamb Skewer Kebab

This is so quick and simple to make. You literally stick everything onto a skewer and put it in the oven for 20 – 25 minutes. So, below is the recipe and and ingredients.

Ingredients: per 1 serving

  • 1/4lb lamb mince
  • 3 – 4 button mushrooms
  • 1 medium onion quartered
  • half a bell pepper
  • 3 – 4 cherry tomato’s

Lamb Kebab on Skewers!

Okay, this is super quick so pay attention. Roll the mince into meat balls (if you wish to season with salt or a herb of your choice such as dill or coriander feel free). Take your skewer, push a quartered piece of onion onto the skewer, followed by a meat ball, then a cherry tomato, a piece of bell pepper another meat ball and a button mushroom to cap it off. Repeat for as many skewers as you have and place the ingredients on the skewer in whichever order you choose. For a difference you could substitute the mushroom for pieces of aubergine. You could also place chili peppers on the skewer. Be inventive and experiment, it is your Fast Food after all!

  1. I’ve done the Atkins thing several times with good suecscs, and am overall a big fan of it. However, I’ve been on it for 3 weeks now and haven’t lost anything to speak of, which has been very frustrating given my past suecscses. I do hope it goes well for you enjoy your smoothie

      • So my boyfriend is dtnlfieeiy an amazing prepare and he’s too good in my experience. Our first date he cooked for me personally also it was amazing. He works a significant amount of in a local resturant rather than really wants to get home and prepare cause he needs to prepare all day long lengthy. I actually want to prepare him an excellent dinner but I’ve got a cooking handicap. I’m not sure how you can prepare! Please I want pointers or great, easy quality recipes. He cooks pretty gormet italian so he’s amazing and I’m not going him to fiercly critque me. Help!!!

      • Heh. I was born in the South, but raised in the Midwest. Both my pnaerts loved to cook, and they used a lot of French and Italian recipes. The ones that START with a pound of butter, and then go from there.And that was back when butter was supposed to kill us, and margarine was supposed to be healthy. That didn’t turn out very well, did it? Now we’ve done a 180 and butter is no longer seen as the enemy (see: French Paradox), but margarine (trans fat) is!Proving once again that we should never allow government to nudge us in any direction. In fact, if the government tells us to go south, say, after a nuclear blast, I’m heading north.

          On a low carbohydrate diet such as Atkins, the ingestion of saturated fats in the form of butter, being one example of a saturated fat, is fine as the body is ‘burning’ fat for fuel.Margarinetends to be manufactured using hydrogenated vegetable Fats, which, along with trans fats are not good to ingest regardless of what type of diet you are following.

          To summarise, as you pointed out Bruno, real dairy butter made from cows milk is perfectly fine once you are following a low carbohydrate diet.

      • a0a0 This review is from: First let me say that I allubotesy love the Atkins Diet, I lost 60 pounds in 3 months but I dont think this book is quick in easy. Some of the recipes call for ATKINS products which have been discontinued such as Atkins quick and easy bake mix. I tried to find these products by going th the Atkins website but everything except the bars and shakes have been discontinued. Also a lot of the recipes call for uncommon ingredients so unless you have the money to go out an buy all these ingredients dont by this book. I recommend that South Beach Quck and Easy cookbook because the diets are similar especially the first phase and these recipes are much easier.

          Actually we carry the full range of Atkins products: http://eatingatkins.ie/products/ There are over 20 of them. We don’t have the bake mix as it’s only available in the US – this has to do with the fact that food regulations are different in Europe to the US. Its true that some of the recipes in the new Atkins cookbook use the bake mix but the vast majority of them have ingredients that are readily available.

          If you look at most of the recipes on the atkins site (uk.atkins.com), they use ingredients you will find in your local supermarket.           • I bought stivea extract powder from the company whose website stated it only contained stivea extract. I opened up this area and located the bottle lists Elements: Maltodextrin, Stevia extract. I don’t consume maltodextrin, so clearly I am coming back these for any 100 % refund.So how can i get stivea (powder or liquid, but prefer powder) without other things inside it? Please perfect solution for those who have purchased from the organization and may verify it consists of nothing extra. Do not want another problem like that one.I am mentioning to Stevia Rebaudiana incidentally. Sorry to possess overlooked that detail.

            Unfortunately our knowledge of stevia based products would be no more comprehensive that yours. In fact it looks like you have already done a lot of research into sourcing stevia products. Perhaps begin by going to http://www.stevia.com or http://www.stevia-products.com. Hopefully you will be successful in finding a stevia based product that doesn’t contain maltodextrin.

        • The only thing that will get you to the weight you want to be at and mantiain it is regular exercise and a healthy balanced diet. I know that is probably not what you want to hear but that is the way it is. You can try any fad diet you want and you will probably lose some weight, but you will put the weight back on again. Just 30 mins a day of exercise will help you to mantiain a good healthy body weight as long as you eat a balanced diet.Hope this helps ( remember there are no short cuts that work long term )

      • veg are horrid things. work. preparation. fairly bland and tasteless. but not if they’re organic. they may be smaller, they may be a little skin blemished, but they taste and smell so good that it’s worth spending time preparing. how many can afford organic?mass production and cheaper agricultural methods have created the beautiful, large, tasteless veg, and along with it the veg loathing modern man. I speak as a farmer.

        • Its just regular evraepatod milk, not the sweetened kind.The can states to simply make use of the equivalent evraepatod milk when i would dairy but I have always heard to make use of equal areas of evraepatod milk and water to from the quantity of dairy you’ll need.Its Nestle Carnation Evaporated Milk in the event that helps.I intend on utilizing it for muffins.
